A top Nigerian lawyer, Femi Falana, has said the recent statement by former US President Donald Trump about Nigeria should push the government to act. Trump had claimed Christians in Nigeria are under a serious threat and are being killed in large numbers by radical Islamists.

Falana spoke on a television programme, challenging the Nigerian government to improve security for all its citizens. He stated that instead of just arguing with Trump’s claim, the government should see it as a reason to stop the killings by terrorists and criminals happening across the nation.

He expressed concern that the violent attacks continue to happen. This is despite the country spending huge amounts of money, “several billions of naira,” on security in its yearly budgets.

The senior advocate accused the former US President of not telling the truth to the international community with his social media post. Trump had directed US lawmakers to look into the situation, vowing that America would not just watch.

Falana, however, stressed that the main issue is the safety of every Nigerian. He urged the Federal Government to finally take strong and effective action to protect the lives and property of its people, making security its most important job.
