As residents of the Federal Capital Territory prepare for Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary activities, security agencies say they are stepping up measures to protect public spaces and prevent possible disruptions across the nation’s capital.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, FCT Command, says it has deployed 3,000 personnel to strategic locations within Abuja as part of a wider security arrangement before, during and after the celebrations. The Command says the deployment is aimed at safeguarding residents, visitors and critical facilities across the territory.
According to the Corps, the operation is designed around areas with high public activity, including shopping malls, markets, motor parks, recreational centres and other locations considered vulnerable to security breaches. Critical National Assets and Infrastructure are also listed among the facilities receiving attention during the period.
The FCT Commandant, Dr Olusola Odumosu, directed the deployment and instructed Area Commanders and Divisional Officers to maintain visible security presence across their jurisdictions. The Command says the move is intended to strengthen response capacity and ensure that security personnel remain alert throughout the anniversary period.
The NSCDC says specialised units have been included in the operation, with personnel from the Arms Squad, Female Strike Force, Crack Squad, Agro Rangers, Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Explosives Unit, as well as the Counter-Terrorism Unit, taking part in the security arrangement.
Beyond visible patrols, the Command says undercover operatives have also been activated to support intelligence gathering and monitor areas identified as potential threats. According to officials, uncompleted buildings and suspected criminal hideouts within the FCT are among locations being watched as part of preventive efforts.
The Commandant has warned personnel against negligence, urging officers involved in the operation to maintain professionalism and ensure full compliance with security directives. Authorities say the measures are part of efforts to allow residents participate in the Independence Anniversary activities in a safe and secure environment.
