The Senate has given federal ministries, departments and agencies three additional months to complete capital projects captured in the 2025 budget, extending the implementation deadline from September 30 to December 31, 2026.

The decision followed the consideration and passage of an amendment bill on Tuesday, allowing the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act to remain active until the end of the year. The move effectively provides additional time for projects whose implementation has not reached the expected level.

The bill was sponsored by the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, who represents Ekiti Central Senatorial District. During debate on its general principles, Senator Bamidele argued that the extension was necessary because several capital projects under the 2025 appropriation had yet to achieve the desired level of execution.

According to the Senate Leader, approximately the funds allocated for the projects had already been released to the relevant ministries, departments and agencies. The additional implementation window is therefore intended to allow those agencies more time to translate the approved funding into completed projects.

The extension comes as the Senate seeks to keep the capital component of the 2025 budget operational beyond the original deadline. The amendment was considered clause by clause before senators approved the change to the implementation period.

The measure is contained in Senate Bill 1067, titled A Bill for an Act to Amend the Appropriations (Repeal & Enactment) Act 2025 to Extend the Implementation of the Capital Aspect of the Appropriations (Repeal & Enactment) Act 2025 from 30th September, 2026 to 31st December, 2026 and for other Related Matters, 2026.

With the new deadline, government agencies now have until December 31 to continue implementing the affected capital projects under the extended 2025 appropriation. The development puts renewed attention on project delivery, as the additional three months are expected to provide more time for approved capital spending to reach completion.
