Nigeria has expanded its presence in the global higher education landscape, with 29 universities featuring in the 2027 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, five more than in the previous edition. The latest results place Nigeria among the countries with the largest number of ranked institutions in sub-Saharan Africa.

The 2027 ranking, released on Wednesday, places Covenant University, the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos in the 801–1000 global band, making them the highest-placed Nigerian institutions in this edition. Ahmadu Bello University and Bayero University follow in the 1001–1200 band.

The broader development, however, is the number of Nigerian universities now visible in the international ranking. Five institutions, Osun State University, the University of Maiduguri, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Kwara State University and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike  entered the ranking for the first time.

The increase also comes with different areas of institutional strength. The University of Lagos recorded Nigeria’s highest research quality score, while Bayero University led among Nigerian institutions on international outlook. Covenant University recorded the country’s strongest score in the industry component, according to the ranking data.

THE assesses research-intensive universities across areas including teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry. For the 2027 edition, 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories were assessed using 17 performance indicators.

At the regional level, the University of Cape Town remained the highest-ranked institution in sub-Saharan Africa, moving to joint 147th position from joint 164th in the previous edition. THE says the number of ranked universities across the region also increased from 55 to 69, with Nigeria contributing 29 institutions.

The latest results therefore offer a wider picture of Nigeria’s university system beyond the position of individual institutions. With more universities now meeting the requirements to enter the global table, attention shifts to whether this expanding international presence can be sustained through stronger research output, teaching, global engagement and links with industry.
