Residents along the Akunu–Auga corridor in Ondo State are being reminded of the growing role of intelligence and community cooperation in preventing violent crime, following a weekend security operation that disrupted the movement of suspected armed men in the area.

According to the Nigerian Army, troops of the 32 Artillery Brigade carried out the operation on Saturday, February 14, 2026, after receiving what authorities described as credible intelligence on the movement of suspected terrorists along the Akunu–Auga Road.

Officials say soldiers stationed at the Forward Operating Base in Auga swiftly mobilised to intercept the suspects, a response that underscores how early information can translate into rapid action on the ground before attacks are carried out.

The Army explained that the patrol encountered the armed men, leading to a gun battle during which two of the suspects were killed, while others reportedly fled the scene with gunshot injuries.

The operation, authorities say, was not carried out in isolation, but involved joint efforts with operatives of the Ondo State Security Network Agency and local vigilante groups, reflecting an approach that blends military presence with local knowledge.

Items recovered at the scene included an AK-47 rifle with ammunition, mobile phones, suspected illicit drugs, charms, and cash, materials officials say could have been used to facilitate criminal activities if the suspects had not been intercepted.

From a preventive standpoint, the Army notes that the outcome highlights the importance of sustained patrols and intelligence-sharing in cutting off criminal networks before they strike, particularly along highways that have previously been identified as vulnerable routes.

Security officials say clearance operations and patrols will continue across flashpoints in Ondo State, while partnerships with local security groups will be strengthened to deny criminals safe passage.

The Army is also urging residents to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies, stressing that community support remains a critical layer of defence in preventing violence and safeguarding lives and property across the state.
