Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has urged Nigeria to move away from an economy heavily dependent on oil and imports, arguing that stronger domestic production is essential to achieving lasting economic stability.

The Abia North Senator made the call on Monday during a television interview, where he identified high fuel prices and the naira’s exchange rate against the dollar as major pressures weighing on the Nigerian economy.

Kalu said the country’s reliance on imported goods leaves Nigerians particularly exposed to movements in fuel and foreign exchange prices. He argued that oil revenue alone cannot provide a sustainable solution to the country’s economic challenges.

According to the lawmaker, Nigeria should channel more resources into producing essential goods locally rather than depending heavily on imports. He said increased domestic production across different sectors would create a more productive economy and provide a stronger foundation for long-term growth.

Kalu also acknowledged the frustration among young Nigerians over the prolonged economic difficulties, saying their concerns about when the situation would improve were understandable. He maintained that meaningful change would require difficult decisions and greater commitment from those responsible for economic management.

He further argued that proceeds from crude oil should be used strategically to strengthen other productive sectors, including agriculture and food production. In his view, producing more of what Nigerians consume would reduce the pressure created by dependence on foreign markets.

Kalu’s position places domestic production at the centre of the debate over Nigeria’s economic recovery, at a time when high living costs, fuel prices and foreign exchange pressures continue to affect households and businesses.
