Residents of Bakori Local Government Area in Katsina State have been urged to remain vigilant following a deadly confrontation between community hunters and suspected bandits, with authorities warning of a possible retaliatory attack. The state government says it is working with security agencies to prevent further violence after the clash left several people dead.
The confrontation occurred at about 1:31 p.m. on Friday in Gidan Wawo village, Kakumi Ward, when armed men reportedly attacked travellers heading towards Illela Market in Sokoto State. According to the state government, community hunters mobilised to confront the attackers, killing 14 suspected bandits in the exchange of gunfire.
The government disclosed the incident in a statement by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasir Mu’azu. It said intelligence reports had earlier indicated that 26 armed men, travelling on 13 motorcycles, were moving towards Dawan Laila forest in Bakori, prompting security agencies to increase surveillance amid concerns about possible mass abductions in nearby communities.
The violence also claimed the lives of two people on the victims’ side. A traveller, identified as 50-year-old Jamilu Lawal, reportedly died after the attackers set his vehicle ablaze, while 29-year-old community hunter Mohammed Ibrahim Jidda was killed during the gun battle. Another hunter, 25-year-old Usman Sunday, sustained gunshot injuries and was receiving medical treatment.
Three other victims were rescued, according to the state government. However, officials said intelligence gathered after the clash suggested that the armed group could attempt a reprisal, raising concerns about the safety of residents and travellers moving through the affected area.
The government said it was coordinating with security agencies to put measures in place to contain the threat and prevent further attacks. It also praised the community hunters and security personnel for their efforts, while urging residents to stay calm and share credible, timely information with the authorities.
The warning comes as the state government seeks to prevent the violence from escalating beyond the initial confrontation. Residents have been encouraged to report suspicious movements to security agencies, while authorities work to address the emerging threat. The government has not disclosed specific details of the planned countermeasures.
