Land grabbing: Women protest against traditional ruler, others in Anambra

Women of Nimo Community, in Njikoka Local Council of Anambra State, yesterday, protested at the Government House, Awka, against what they termed land grabbing and high-handedness by their traditional ruler, Igwe Max Ike Oliobi, and leadership of the town union.

The protesters, mostly elderly women numbering over 700, carried placards and sang solidarity songs, appealing to Governor Chukwuma Soludo to investigate activities of the traditional ruler and the town union executives.

They warned that the development may cause mayhem in the community if not nipped in the bud.

Displaying placards such as, “The leadership of Nimo Town Union Development must go,” “Nimo Town Union Leadership is our subject, therefore, has no right to sell or negotiate our land,” among others.

Addressing newsmen shortly after the protest, spokesperson for the group, Ifeoma Ezeozue, accused the town leaders of turning the community into their personal property.

Ezeozue also alleged that the leaders were using security personnel to harass and intimidate perceived enemies, especially the youths, who challenged alleged evils against the community.

She alleged that Nimo ancestral farmlands were being sold out indiscriminately without prior notice, adding that they no longer go to farm, because there is no more land to farm.
