Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has appointed a retired Major General, Lukman Tokunbo Omoniyi, as Executive Adviser on Security Coordination, a move aimed at strengthening public safety across the state.

The appointment, which takes immediate effect, was conveyed in an official letter issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Musibau Babatunde, according to state officials.

Authorities say the decision comes amid ongoing efforts by the Oyo State Government to tighten security coordination and reduce vulnerabilities affecting communities, highways, and urban centres.

Governor Makinde, while congratulating the retired officer, charged him with the responsibility of harmonising security operations and ensuring that residents can go about their daily activities without fear.

The role places Omoniyi at the centre of intelligence sharing and operational coordination among security agencies operating in the state, a task officials describe as critical to preventing crime rather than merely reacting to it.

Major General Omoniyi is a senior infantry officer with extensive experience across command, staff, and training appointments within the Nigerian Army, a background seen as key to managing complex security structures.

His academic training includes postgraduate degrees in Humanitarian and Refugee Studies as well as Strategic Studies from the University of Ibadan, with a current doctoral programme focused on peace, security, and humanitarian studies.

Government sources say the administration expects the appointment to translate into a more proactive, intelligence-driven security framework that prioritises the protection of lives and property across all parts of Oyo State.
