President Bola Tinubu has named a new chief to lead the country’s election body. He has chosen Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), to become the next Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This decision was officially announced on Thursday and ends the long tenure of the former chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

The appointment comes at a critical time for the nation. The new INEC chairman will immediately face the huge task of preparing for the next general elections. All eyes will be on how he manages the process, as past elections have been surrounded by disputes and accusations of fraud from opposing parties.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the outgoing chairman, led INEC through two general elections. His time in office received both praise and strong criticism. While some commended the use of new technology, others questioned the final results, leaving many citizens with doubts about the electoral system.

The President’s choice, Professor Amupitan, is a respected legal expert. His background in law is seen as an asset for handling the complex legal challenges that often follow Nigerian elections. His appointment has been met with cautious hope, as the public waits to see if he can restore full confidence in the voting process.

This change in leadership places a heavy burden on the new chairman. His main job will be to prove that the commission is truly independent and can deliver a fair and transparent election for all Nigerians. The success of the next democracy will depend on it.
