The Ondo state House of Assembly has gotten a new substantive speaker. He is Rt. Hon. Bamidele Oleyeloogun from Ifedore state constituency. Also, a new Deputy Speaker has also emerged in the person of Hon. Ayodeji Iroju from Odigbo state constituency.
However, the new speaker, Bamidele Oleyeloogun, who originally got his State Assembly ticket under the platform of the PDP cross-carpeted on the floor of the Assembly yesterday to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. His defection was announced immediately after his emergence as the new speaker. While giving reason for his defection, Oleyeloogun said, it was obvious that right from the National stage, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has been factionalised and the different factions laying claim to the structure of the party have badly impugned on what was left of the party’s integrity, adding that same scenario had played out here in the state. He said he and his other colleagues who left PDP could no longer endure the squabble and factionalization in the party hence their defection to Apc.
The new Speaker assured the Akeredolu led government of the support of the state House of Assembly.
It will be recalled that a disagreement had ensued in the Assembly towards the end of the Olusegun Mimiko’ s administration over the allegation of financial impropriety leveled against Rt. Hon. Jumoke Akindele, which led to her purported impeachment as the Speaker of the House; an impeachment which she denied and asked the general public to discountenance, alleging that it was a political move by “over ambitious House members.” This development had eventually led to a stalemate in the house, factionalizing the House into the emergency of Hon. Malachy Coker’s leadership and that of Hon. Jumoke Akindele.
