Nigeria’s Revenue Falls Drastically Short, Threatening National Budget.

Nigeria faces a severe budget crisis as official data reveals a massive shortfall in government income. The Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, disclosed that the nation has collected only a fraction of its projected revenue for the 2025 fiscal year.

Appearing before House of Representatives committees on Tuesday, Edun stated the country has so far garnered just N10.7 trillion. This figure is a staggering N30.1 trillion less than the N40.8 trillion revenue target set for the year. The minister called for spending to be tightly linked to actual income, not hopeful projections.

This huge gap raises immediate concerns about funding the N54.9 trillion “budget of restoration.” That budget plan was designed to stabilize the economy and rebuild national prosperity. The revenue shortfall now puts those goals and many government programs at serious risk.

“We must be ambitious, but given the experience of the past two years, spending linked to these revenues must be based on what actually comes in, not what we hope to earn,” Minister Edun warned lawmakers. His statement highlights a pattern of revenues falling far below official targets.

The alarming report comes on the same day the Senate passed the framework for the 2026-2028 budget cycle. This paves the way for President Bola Tinubu to present a new N54.4 trillion spending plan for 2026, even as the current year’s finances are in doubt.

The situation forces a critical question: how will the government fund its ambitious plans? With revenues at less than 30% of expectations, tough choices on spending cuts or increased borrowing appear unavoidable, impacting the nation’s economic stability.
