Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has publicly challenged President Bola Tinubu over unfulfilled promises to solve Nigeria’s electricity crisis. Obi pointed to the President’s 2022 campaign pledge to forgo a second term if he failed to deliver steady power within four years.

In a statement on Wednesday, Obi noted two national grid collapses already in January 2026 and approximately twelve in 2025. He described this as a direct contradiction to Tinubu’s specific commitment on reliable power supply.

Obi contrasted Nigeria’s generation, which he stated is below 5,000 megawatts, with Turkey’s output of over 120,000 megawatts. He made the comparison following a recent presidential trip to Turkey, a nation with a smaller population.

The former governor also criticized a focus on foreign travel over domestic problems. “Our appeal is simple: stay at home and confront the nation’s problems,” Obi wrote in his statement.

He warned that governance failures risk being overshadowed by political activities and the next election cycle. Obi called for public demand for accountability and responsible leadership.

The statement concluded with Obi’s signature message of hope for the nation’s future, framing the electricity crisis as a central failure of current administration.
