Obi’s blockade in Benue: Olabode charges politicians to let democracy survive

Public affairs analyst, Mr.Olabode Omoyele, has condemned the reported blockade of Peter Obi’s convoy in parts of Benue State, describing it as an assault on democratic norms and the right to free political engagement.

In a statement made available to newsmen, Olabode said no politician, regardless of party affiliation, should be denied access to any part of the country in the course of lawful political activities.

“I condemn in totality the attempt to obstruct the movement of Mr. Peter Obi in Benue State,” he said. “Such actions do not serve any political interest. They only serve to shrink our democratic space and return us to the era of intimidation.”

Olabode Omoyele, who has been vocal on issues of electoral integrity, appealed to political leaders across the divide to rein in their supporters and agents, warning that harassing opposition figures would weaken institutions and erode public trust ahead of future elections.

“Democracy cannot survive if candidates are chased out of states or denied freedom of movement,” he stated. “Whether you are APC, PDP, LP, or any other party, the constitution guarantees every presidential candidate the right to consult with the people. Benue people, like Nigerians elsewhere, deserve to hear from all aspirants.”

He urged security agencies to ensure the safety of all political actors and to act without bias, noting that the 2023 elections gone by already showed how tension and mob actions could degenerate if left unchecked.

“Nigeria is bigger than any individual ambition. Politicians must learn to compete with ideas, not with roadblocks,” Olabode added. “Let democracy survive. Let the people decide.”

The Public Affairs Analyst called on traditional rulers, civil society groups and the Benue State Government to investigate the incident and guarantee that such occurrences are not repeated.
