Ondo South Senator commiserates with Odigbo communities, warns against herbal consumption

By Steve Ovirih.

The Senator representing Ondo South in The National Assembly, Senator Prof.Dayo Faduyile has commiserated with his constituents in Odigbo Local Govt over the unfortunate death of not less than 24 people following the consumption of a suspected herbal concoction with several others reportedly in various hospitals on treatment.

Senator Faduyile in an official statement obtained by newsmen described the sad occurrence as regrettable and avoidable, while noting that National Agency For Food and Drug Administration and Control,NAFDAC, has continued to state that herbal concoction either in satchel or those sold by the road side are not healthy for consumption.

” I received with regret the news of the death of 24 people across Odigbo Local Government. This is really a very sad one indeed and as people who put value on life and healthy well being, this development calls our attention to the need to be extra careful with items we consume in the name of herbal cure.

“My heartfelt condolences go to the families of the deceased as this no doubt has caused a great loss and emotional pains. I also express my condolences to The Chairman of Odigbo Local Govt, Hon.Taiwo Adegoroye and I pray we don’t experience such fatalities anymore in our District,”Senator Faduyile stated.

The Professor of Pathology and Forensic Medicine maintained that beyond the alleged cause of death of the victims, there is need
for thorough investigation including Autopsies and toxicology so that primary cause will be established to aid mass awareness campaign against the indiscriminate consumption of all manners of concoction our people in the hinterland have so much gotten used to over the years. “We must take precautions against consumption of any herbal remedies not medically certified. It is not funny how people take drugs with little or no prescription and how how fixated on herbal concoction our people
have become.

“We pray for the repose of the deceased, we pray that God grant their family the fortitude to bear the pains of their loss and above all, we pray that prompt healing come the way of those receiving treatment in the hospital,” Senator Faduyile added.

According to report, while 16 people died in Odigbo town,8 died in Araromi -Obu from the consumption of the suspected herbal concoction.
