The rising cost of living in the Northwest has taken centre stage in political discussions after governorship candidates of the African Democratic Congress in the region outlined economic relief as a major priority ahead of the 2027 elections. The candidates say addressing household pressures will be central to their proposed agenda if elected.
The Kebbi State ADC governorship candidate, Abubakar Malami, made the position known on Tuesday in Abuja during the signing of the Northwest ADC Governorship Candidates’ Compact for 2027 to 2031. The document was signed alongside candidates representing the other six states in the geopolitical zone.
Malami said the removal of fuel subsidy had placed additional pressure on families in the region, contributing to higher living expenses and making daily survival more difficult for many residents. He argued that restoring the subsidy should be considered among immediate steps to reduce economic hardship.
The candidates collectively called on the Federal Government to review the subsidy removal policy, stating that the expected gains from the decision had not reflected in improved living conditions for many Nigerians. They linked the current economic situation to increased challenges, including food insecurity and declining purchasing power.
According to the ADC candidates, their proposal to restore the subsidy is part of a broader response to the economic concerns affecting communities across the Northwest. They said government policies must focus more directly on improving the welfare of ordinary citizens.
The position forms part of the party’s early preparations for the 2027 electoral cycle, with candidates seeking to present economic management as a key issue for voters. However, the debate over fuel subsidy continues to attract different views, with discussions centred on balancing government spending, economic reforms and citizens’ welfare.
As political parties begin to define their priorities ahead of the next general elections, the ADC candidates say tackling hardship and improving living conditions will remain a major focus of their campaign message across the Northwest.
