The Oyo State Government is seeking public submissions to help its Judicial Commission of Inquiry establish what happened before, during and after the abduction of 46 schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.

The inquiry is examining the May 15, 2026 attack on three schools in Esinele and Yawota communities, where armed men abducted 39 students and seven teachers. The victims spent 56 days in captivity before security agencies announced their rescue in July.

The government says the commission is particularly interested in information that could shed light on the security situation surrounding the schools and the response of security agencies before, during and after the attack. The investigation follows Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for an independent examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Members of the public with relevant information have until Friday, August 14, 2026, to submit memoranda. The state government says submissions should contain the contributor’s full name, contact details and any supporting documents that may assist the commission.

Physical submissions can be made at the Conference Room, Office of the Head of Service, State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan. The government has also provided an electronic channel for submissions through oy sjceoriireabduction@gmail.com, with contributors urged to meet the stated deadline.

The inquiry comes after the abduction generated widespread concern across Oyo State and prompted security operations that eventually led to the victims’ release. The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said at the time that the victims were rescued without any concession being made to the abductors.

For the commission, the public submissions provide an opportunity to gather information beyond official accounts and establish a clearer picture of the circumstances surrounding the attack and the security response. The state government says the exercise is part of efforts to strengthen accountability and improve the protection of communities and schools.
