Academic activities at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, face fresh disruption after the university’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities declared a total and indefinite strike over the non-implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU.

The union’s chairman, Professor Boluwaji Oshodi, said on Tuesday that the decision followed what he described as prolonged inaction by the Ondo State Government despite letters and requests for meetings on the implementation of the agreement.

The development comes barely a week after the union suspended an earlier industrial action over outstanding salaries, following the payment of the arrears that triggered that dispute. The latest action, however, is focused on the implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement and payment of salary arrears from January.

Professor Oshodi said the union was no longer prepared to rely on assurances, insisting that lecturers would return to their classrooms only after concrete steps were taken to implement the agreement and settle the outstanding payments. He said the union remained willing to engage the state government, but dialogue must be matched by action.

The 2025 agreement includes an upgraded salary structure, a 40 per cent review for academic staff and the payment of accumulated salary arrears. The AAUA chapter is questioning why implementation has not commenced in Ondo State, noting that some other state governments have already begun acting on the agreement.

For students, the immediate consequence is another interruption to lectures and other academic activities, coming shortly after the previous strike was suspended. The uncertainty could affect the academic calendar if the dispute persists, although the union has not given a timeline for ending the action.

The AAUA dispute also comes against the backdrop of a similar development at Imo State University, where its ASUU chapter recently declared an indefinite strike over unpaid entitlements and unresolved welfare issues. At AAUA, the union says the next step now depends on concrete implementation by the state government and payment of the outstanding arrears.
