PDP Crisis Tests Opposition Strength Ahead of 2027 Polls.

Nigeria’s opposition landscape is facing renewed scrutiny as internal divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party raise questions about its capacity to mount a strong challenge in the 2027 general elections.

At a National Executive Committee meeting held in Abuja on Friday, factional National Chairman Tanimu Turaki moved to reassure party members that efforts are ongoing to stabilise the platform and ensure its participation in the next electoral cycle.

Turaki told party leaders that consultations and internal reviews had been deliberately extended to allow for a clearer understanding of both legal disputes and political tensions affecting the party’s leadership structure.

He maintained that, despite defections and ongoing disagreements, the PDP remains a viable political institution, insisting that its structure is resilient enough to withstand internal shocks and still field candidates nationwide in 2027.

The meeting also reflected deeper concerns within the party over recent exits of high-profile members, with leaders acknowledging the impact but downplaying suggestions that the development could weaken its long-term relevance.

Board of Trustees Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, called on members to remain committed while awaiting the outcome of reconciliation efforts led by a committee headed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.

Other party figures, including House of Representatives Caucus Leader Fred Agbedi and representatives of state chairmen, expressed support for the current leadership, urging members to stay focused and resist external pressures as the party navigates its internal challenges.

Political observers say the PDP’s ability to resolve its leadership crisis and rebuild cohesion will be critical, not only for its electoral prospects but also for maintaining a competitive democratic environment where opposition parties can effectively hold the government to account.
