Nigeria’s political climate is once again under the spotlight as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State raises concerns over what it describes as growing intolerance for dissent, following criticism from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) directed at Governor Seyi Makinde.

The PDP, in a statement issued on Sunday by its Publicity Secretary, Michael Ogunsina, accused the APC of attempting to silence opposition voices, warning that such actions could undermine democratic principles. The party’s response comes after the APC’s National Secretariat faulted remarks linked to Governor Makinde, sparking a fresh war of words between both parties.

Framing its argument around democratic accountability, the PDP insisted that political expression, including references to historical events, should not be misconstrued as incitement. According to the party, Governor Makinde’s comments were intended as cautionary reflections rather than calls to action, stressing that democratic governance thrives on open dialogue, not suppression.

The party further pointed to Nigeria’s political history, noting that several key figures within the APC, including President Bola Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari, had previously used strong rhetoric during their years in opposition. It argued that such precedents make it inconsistent for the ruling party to now criticize similar expressions from opposition leaders.

Beyond the immediate dispute, the PDP linked the situation to broader national concerns, suggesting that attempts to clamp down on dissent may be driven by rising public dissatisfaction over economic conditions and governance challenges. It described the APC’s reaction as reflective of political anxiety rather than strength, cautioning against what it called selective interpretation of political speech.

Reaffirming its position, the PDP maintained that democracy must remain a “marketplace of ideas” where multiple voices can be heard without fear. The party concluded by asserting that Governor Makinde remains committed to responsible governance and democratic values, urging political actors to uphold fairness and consistency in evaluating public discourse.
