Authorities at Seat of Wisdom Secondary School in Aliade, Benue State, have taken decisive disciplinary action following a widely circulated video showing a female student assaulted and stripped by her peers, with 11 students now expelled over the incident.
The school confirmed that the decision came after an internal investigation into the incident, which occurred about a week ago during extension classes for JSS3 and SS3 students, but outside the main school premises. Officials say the altercation began as a dispute between two students before escalating into a group attack.
According to findings by the school’s disciplinary committee, the confrontation moved to a bush area behind the school, where other students joined in, turning what was initially a one-on-one fight into a chaotic scene. Some of those present recorded the incident and shared it online, amplifying public outrage.
School authorities say teachers eventually intervened to restore order after the disturbance drew attention, preventing further escalation. The management subsequently suspended the extension classes and began a formal review of the incident.
A source within the school told journalists that disciplinary measures were initiated even before the video surfaced online, stressing that each student’s level of involvement was carefully examined before sanctions were applied.
The expulsion letters, issued to nine girls and two boys and signed by the school principal, cited violations including physical assault and the unauthorised recording and circulation of the footage, which officials say brought the institution into disrepute. Parents of the affected students have been notified.
Meanwhile, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has directed its Benue command to collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure a thorough investigation, as the case continues to raise broader concerns about student conduct, supervision, and accountability within and around school environments.
