Senator Faduyile: The urgency of purpose

By Steve Ovirih.

When Prof. Francis Adedayo Faduyile walked into the 10th National Assembly as Senator representing Ondo South on June 24, 2026, he did not come as a typical politician. He came as a physician, a pathologist, a former President of the Nigerian Medical Association, and a man who understands that in medicine, as in governance, time is life.

That urgency of purpose is already defining him.

Last week, the Senate was jolted from routine debates when an Ebola case was confirmed in Abuja from a woman arriving from Uganda. While others were still processing the headline, it was Faduyile who seized the moment with health inclined legislation.

He moved a motion that was not sentimental but surgical.

The motion, debated and adopted on October 21, demanded emergency funding from the Service Wide Vote, mandatory health screening at all international airports, seaports and land borders, retraining and equipping of Port Health officers, and functional isolation centres across the country.

More profoundly, he called for what many before him had ignored: the replacement of the Quarantine Act of 1926, a colonial era law still central to Nigeria’s public health response with a modern legislation aligned with International Health Regulations (2005).

That is the Faduyile signature: professional knowledge deployed as legislative tool.

For those who know his trajectory, this is not new. As NMA President from 2018 to 2020, he led the medical community Lassa fever outbreaks, and the early days of COVID-19 with a firm but conciliatory voice. As Special Adviser on Health Matters to the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, he was at the heart of Ondo’s health reforms.

What Ondo South now has is not just a Senator who will attract projects, but a specialist-lawmaker; a rare breed in a legislature often criticised for lacking technical depth.

In a Senate dominated by lawyers, businessmen and career politicians, Faduyile represents a compelling argument that Nigeria needs more professionals in parliament not just for title but for value.

The Ebola motion may be his first major intervention, but it signals a larger philosophy: that representation must be responsive, and responsiveness must be urgent.

Because for a pathologist who has seen cells mutate and for a physician who has seen patients die while waiting, governance cannot afford to be leisurely.

In Senator Faduyile, Ondo South has found a Legislature in a hurry to make his stay in the Senate count.
