A month long intelligence-led security operation involving multiple agencies has culminated in the rescue of 44 pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The Defence Headquarters said the operation demonstrated the value of coordinated intelligence gathering and joint security action in responding to complex kidnapping cases.
In a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director of 2 Division Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, the military said the victims, who were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, regained their freedom on Friday following carefully planned operations. According to the statement, the mission was designed to ensure the safe recovery of the hostages while limiting risks to innocent lives.
The Defence Headquarters said troops of the Nigerian Army under the command of the General Officer Commanding 2 Division, Major General C.R. Nnebeife, worked alongside specialised units from the Office of the National Security Adviser, including the National Counter Terrorism Centre. Other participating agencies included the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, National Intelligence Agency, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, as well as local vigilantes, hunters and Amotekun personnel.
According to the military, security operatives concentrated their efforts on identifying the leaders of the kidnapping network, disrupting their logistics and exposing the informants and hideouts linked to the group within the Old Oyo National Park Forest. Authorities said the intelligence-driven approach enabled operatives to weaken the criminal network before moving to secure the victims’ release.
The statement added that several suspects were arrested in Oyo State and other parts of the country during the operation. The arrests, according to the military, increased pressure on the kidnappers and disrupted their support structures, ultimately leading to the unconditional release of the pupils and teachers. It also disclosed that follow-up operations are planned to apprehend other members of the network.
While describing the mission as successful, the Defence Headquarters acknowledged that some security personnel sustained casualties during the operation. It, however, stressed that every stage of the rescue was carefully planned to minimise collateral damage and prioritise the safety of the abducted children and their teachers.
The rescued victims are currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital, according to the military. The Defence Headquarters said they will be handed over to the Oyo State Government after receiving appropriate care, paving the way for their reunion with their families as investigations and further security operations continue.
