Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has called for greater priority to be placed on national security following the release of kidnapped schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State. In a statement issued on Saturday by his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku described the victims’ freedom as welcome relief but argued that protecting citizens should take precedence over political activities.

The former vice president commended the Nigerian military for securing the release of the victims, describing the operation as a significant achievement for the country’s security forces. He said the rescue brought hope to affected families and highlighted the commitment of personnel involved in efforts to tackle insecurity.

Atiku, however, expressed concern over the timing of the rescue, noting that it coincided with the launch of the All Progressives Congress’ “Door-to-Door” campaign for the 2027 presidential election. He said the development raised questions about the government’s priorities while the victims had remained in captivity for several weeks.

According to him, the immediate responsibility of any administration is to safeguard lives and reassure citizens facing security threats. He argued that political campaigns should not overshadow efforts to respond to incidents involving the safety and welfare of Nigerians, particularly vulnerable groups such as schoolchildren.

The former vice president also said the office of the Commander-in-Chief carries both constitutional and moral responsibilities. He maintained that Nigerians expect visible leadership during periods of national crisis and significant security developments, stressing that decisive action against criminal groups should remain at the forefront of government activities.

In his statement, Atiku praised members of the armed forces for what he described as their dedication and professionalism in the operation that led to the victims’ release. He said their efforts deserved national recognition, adding that successes in the fight against insecurity should be sustained through continued support for security agencies.

The comments come a day after the kidnapped schoolchildren and teachers regained their freedom following weeks in captivity. While welcoming their release, Atiku urged the Federal Government to continue placing security and the protection of citizens at the centre of national governance, insisting that restoring public confidence requires sustained action against kidnapping and other violent crimes.
