Ondo South and the Politics of Continuity

~ Why Princess Oladunni Catherine Odu represents a stabilising choice in the Senate by-election

As the Ondo South Senate by-election approaches, political attention is gradually shifting from partisan calculations to a more substantive concern. That’s how to sustain credible legislative representation in a district that has only recently begun to regain national visibility.

At present, Ondo South is represented by Distinguished Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, Ph.D, CFR, whose tenure, though transitional in nature, has provided the district with renewed presence and seriousness within the upper chamber of the National Assembly. With his impending assumption of ambassadorial responsibilities, the by-election becomes not merely a contest for succession, but a test of continuity in senatorial stewardship.

The central question, therefore, is not simply who occupies the seat next, but who is best positioned to continue and consolidate the legislative momentum already established. It is within this context that Princess Oladunni Catherine Odu enters the race.

Rather than representing a break from the current trajectory, her candidacy signals a deliberate effort at institutional continuity. In a political environment often defined by abrupt shifts and policy discontinuities, Princess Odu’s emergence reflects a stabilising logic; that which seek to preserve recent gains while deepening their impact through a more people-focused legislative engagement.

Senator Jimoh Ibrahim’s tenure has helped restore Ondo South’s relevance in national discourse, particularly in terms of intellectual contribution and elite policy visibility. The challenge now is to ensure that this relevance is not short-lived or sacrificed on the altar of political experimentation.

Princess Odu appears poised to take up that responsibility. Her political profile is anchored on consistency, civic engagement and a sustained alignment with grassroots aspirations across the district. Unlike the culture of opportunism that has often defined senatorial contests, her disposition suggests a more structured understanding of legislative duty that is grounded in service, accountability and long-term representation.

The Ondo South Senate by-election, therefore, should be seen less as a routine political exercise and more as a strategic moment of succession planning. It is a choice between preserving an emerging legacy of credible representation and returning to a cycle of uncertainty that has historically undermined the district’s interests.

In this moment of transition, continuity becomes not a conservative instinct, but a political asset and in that continuum, Princess Oladunni Catherine Odu represents a logical and timely extension of responsible senatorial leadership in Ondo South.
