Defection Sparks Unease Among Grassroots Supporters

The political realignment in Kano State is drawing strong emotional reactions from supporters of the Kwankwasiyya movement, following the decision of the state government to align with the All Progressives Congress.

Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, spoke publicly after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and his political allies were formally received into the All Progressives Congress, marking a major shift in the state’s political landscape.

In a video shared on social media on Monday, Kwankwaso expressed sadness over the move, saying it had unsettled many loyal supporters who worked for years to build the Kwankwasiyya structure at the grassroots.

According to him, the development has left members of the movement confused, as the government they helped form was, in his words, moved away without clear explanation from the political family that brought it to power.

Kwankwaso described the situation as painful for supporters who made sacrifices during the campaigns, noting that many ordinary party faithful now feel politically displaced and uncertain about the future.

Despite the disappointment, he said he was offering prayers for supporters, adding that only God fully understands the reasons behind the shift and how it may eventually play out.

He also acknowledged recent victories recorded by Kwankwasiyya-backed candidates in legislative elections in parts of Kano, though he observed that voter turnout during the polls was low.

Kwankwaso concluded by reassuring supporters that the movement remains intact, urging them to stay hopeful, while noting that those who left could still return, as the door remains open to members of the Kwankwasiyya family.
