PDP Leadership Crisis Deepens as Court Ruling Forces Urgent NEC Meeting in Abuja.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is moving to stabilise its leadership structure following a Supreme Court ruling, with a faction backed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde announcing an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Monday in Abuja.

The meeting, according to a notice issued by members of the NEC, is expected to bring together key stakeholders of the party, including governors, lawmakers, and members of the Board of Trustees, in a bid to address the leadership vacuum created by the court’s decision.

This follows last Thursday’s judgment by the Supreme Court, which nullified the party’s national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November. The convention had produced Tanimu Turaki (SAN) as national chairman alongside other members of the National Working Committee.

With the apex court’s verdict, the party’s previously recognised leadership from that convention has effectively lost legal standing, raising fresh concerns about the PDP’s internal structure and its readiness for upcoming political activities.

Party sources say the planned NEC meeting is being convened under constitutional provisions, with at least two-thirds of committee members backing the move. Officials note that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has also been duly informed, in line with regulatory requirements.

Observers say the outcome of Monday’s meeting could determine the PDP’s immediate direction, as party leaders seek to restore order, rebuild confidence among members, and prevent further divisions within one of Nigeria’s major opposition parties.
