The contest for political influence in Rivers State is gathering momentum as loyalists of key power blocs position themselves ahead of the 2027 governorship election, with Kingsley Chinda emerging as one of the latest figures cleared to participate in the governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress.

Chinda, who is widely regarded as an ally of Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, successfully passed the APC screening process ahead of the party’s primary election scheduled for May 21. His entry into the race adds another layer to the political rivalry already shaping the future of leadership in Rivers State.

The development comes amid growing speculation over who may eventually secure the backing of influential figures within the party. Although Wike has not publicly endorsed any aspirant, political observers believe the outcome of the APC primary could significantly alter existing alliances within the state.

Incumbent Governor Siminalayi Fubara is also among those seeking the APC governorship ticket for the 2027 election, setting the stage for what party members describe as a high-stakes internal contest. Analysts say the battle is not only about candidate selection but also about determining which political structure will dominate Rivers politics in the coming years.

The screening exercise, conducted by the APC, is part of the party’s effort to verify the credentials and eligibility of aspirants before the primary election. Party officials say the process is intended to ensure compliance with internal guidelines and strengthen confidence in the selection procedure.

With consultations and alignments continuing across Rivers State, attention is now turning to the May 21 primary, where party delegates will decide who flies the APC flag. Political watchers say the outcome could reshape alliances ahead of the wider 2027 general election and influence the balance of power within the state’s political landscape.
