The screening of governorship aspirants by the All Progressives Congress has intensified political preparations ahead of the 2027 Lagos governorship election, with Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, successfully completing the party’s verification exercise in Abuja.
Hamzat appeared before the APC Governorship Screening Committee over the weekend as the ruling party continued internal consultations and assessments of aspirants seeking to contest its primary election. The process, party officials say, is aimed at evaluating the qualifications, experience, and public records of those interested in leading the state.
Speaking with journalists after the exercise, the deputy governor described the screening as detailed and transparent. According to him, committee members reviewed documents submitted by aspirants and asked questions relating to their professional background, governance experience, and previous public service responsibilities.
The development reflects growing political activity within the APC as attention gradually shifts toward succession plans in Lagos, one of Nigeria’s most politically influential states. Analysts say the party’s internal processes are likely to shape the tone of the wider governorship contest in the months ahead.
Hamzat said he remained confident in the party’s democratic structure and maintained that the final decision would rest with party members during the primary election. He also stressed the need for continuity in governance, noting that leadership should remain focused on policies capable of improving the lives of residents.
The Lagos deputy governor further stated that the state must continue to position itself as a centre for innovation, economic growth, and public sector development. His appearance before the screening committee comes as aspirants across political parties begin consultations and strategic alignments ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
