The Peoples Democratic Party in Ebonyi State has called for greater accountability from Governor Francis Nwifuru over comments made during a recent swearing-in ceremony for local government chairmen, warning that political statements ahead of the 2027 elections must not create an atmosphere of fear or hostility.

The reaction followed remarks by the governor at the inauguration of newly elected council chairmen and their deputies in Abakaliki, where he charged them to strengthen the All Progressives Congress’ presence across their local government areas ahead of the next general election.

Governor Nwifuru, according to reports, warned the council chairmen that they could face removal if their councils failed to deliver victory for the APC in the 2027 polls. He also urged them to resist opposition influence in their areas and maintain the party’s dominance at the grassroots level.

Responding during a radio programme on Friday, the PDP Publicity Secretary in Ebonyi State, Darlington Peter-Onwe, criticised the remarks, describing them as capable of increasing political tension in the state. He called on the governor to withdraw the statement or take responsibility for what he described as a troubling message.

Peter-Onwe argued that public office holders have a duty to promote peace and protect citizens, especially as political activities gradually increase ahead of the 2027 elections. He expressed concern that statements from political leaders could influence the behaviour of supporters and affect relations between rival parties.

The PDP spokesman also compared the situation with leadership responses in other states, citing Abia State Governor Alex Otti’s handling of a previous public issue as an example of accountability. He said leaders should acknowledge concerns and address issues that may affect public confidence.

The Ebonyi State Government has not announced any reversal of the governor’s comments, while the debate continues over the role of political leaders in maintaining a peaceful environment ahead of future elections. Stakeholders are expected to watch how political actors manage their messages as campaigns and preparations for 2027 gradually take shape.
