Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other Northern politicians seeking the presidency to defer their ambitions until 2031, arguing that President Bola Tinubu should be allowed to complete two terms in office.

Akume made the appeal while addressing Benue indigenes living in Kaduna, where he called on Northern leaders to remain united and avoid political decisions that could weaken the region’s collective influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The former Benue State governor argued that Northern presidential bids in 2027 could create divisions within the region and distract its leaders from longer-term political objectives. He maintained that the North should focus on supporting Tinubu’s administration rather than allowing competing ambitions to undermine its unity.

Akume also cautioned against efforts to divide Northerners along political, religious or personal lines. Reflecting on past political disagreements, he said the region needed cooperation and a common approach to national issues if it was to preserve its political relevance.

His remarks place the question of regional unity alongside the wider debate over power rotation and political succession in Nigeria. By calling for Northern aspirants to wait until 2031, Akume is advocating continuity for the current administration before the North seeks the presidency.

The SGF further stressed that national progress depends on peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and religious communities. He urged Nigerians to preserve their cultural identities and traditions while building stronger relationships across regional and religious boundaries.

Akume’s position sets out his preferred path for the North ahead of the next election cycle, but the remarks do not establish a binding agreement among political parties or prospective candidates. The 2027 presidential contest remains a matter of political competition, with the question of succession likely to continue shaping discussions among leaders across the country.
