The Inspector General of Police has raised an investigative panel to find out the remote and immediate cause of the communal clash which erupted between the Yorubas and the Hausas at Ile-Ife in Osun state.
IGP Idris while setting up the panel noted that communal strife that could stir tribal discord among different ethnic groups with reprisal effect must not be allowed in the ancient community of Ile – Ife or anywhere in Nigeria.
The committee headed by a commissioner of Police Hammed Bello has since arrived Osogbo, the state capital.
An altercation between an Ife man and an Hausa man at Ile-Ife had resulted in a free-for-all fight which stirred a communal uprising in the town early last week. It was reported that there was heavy casualty in the clash which happened at the ever busy Sabo area of Ile – Ife. The state Governor, Rauf Aregbesola in his bid to quell the uprising had declared curfew in the town. Both the state Governor and the Ooni of Ife condemned the development in its entirety.
