ASUU goes on a month warning strike.

– Steve Ovirih.

Academic Staff Union of universities ( ASUU) has risen from a neck- to – neck marathon meeting in Lagos with the conclusion that the body should embark on a one full month strike in the first instance to express their disappointment over government’s shoddy handling of their agitations in the past two years.

News has been rife since last week and this medium had reported it that the University lecturers are putting finishing touches to a broad based , total and collective industrial action that will paralyse academic activities in the Nigerian ivory towers.

On Monday morning, rising from their marathon session, ASUU announced a one month industrial action to give government adequate time to weigh all their options about the demands of the body.

National President of ASUU, Dr. Emmanuel Shodeke while addressing newsmen in Lagos said the body is aware of the inconveniences their action will cause both the students and their parents, particularly as they are also parents with wards in the universities.

The ASUU President however blamed Federal government for foot dragging over the demands of the union , stressing that government had yet to pay the revitalization fund , the earned academic allowance and the vexed issue of IPPS has not been resolved . He added that what Federal Government has perfected is the art of changing the negotiation team from its camp which makes the whole process of negotiating clumsy and unending.

ASUU therefore says it is embarking on the one month strike as a warning exercise and it commences today , 14th February , 2022, with a condition that if government doesn’t not activate the processes of granting the body’s demand after the warning strike, a full swing strike will commence.
