The unanimous endorsement of the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebowale Ogundoyin, by lawmakers to succeed Governor Seyi Makinde in 2027 is drawing attention to the growing trend of early political positioning within state governance.
The decision was announced during plenary on Wednesday, where members of the Assembly openly backed Ogundoyin, who represents Ibarapa East State Constituency under the Peoples Democratic Party, as their preferred candidate for the next governorship race.
Moving the motion, Deputy Speaker Muhammad Fadeyi said lawmakers had resolved to rally support across the state for the Speaker, describing him as a steady figure within the legislative arm who has contributed to institutional stability.
Fadeyi added that, in their assessment, Ogundoyin possesses the leadership qualities required to take over from the current administration when Governor Makinde completes his tenure.
The Majority Leader, Sanjo Adedoyin, also spoke in support of the endorsement, noting that the Speaker’s performance in office has demonstrated capacity and preparedness for higher responsibilities within the state.
The development, however, highlights broader governance questions around succession planning and the role of state legislatures in shaping future executive leadership well ahead of election cycles.
With the 2027 elections still some distance away, the endorsement signals early political alignment within the state, as stakeholders begin to position themselves in what is expected to be a competitive race for Oyo’s top office.
