A Jos Area Court sentenced Abdullahi Usman to 12 months imprisonment on Thursday for blackmailing and attempting to entice a married woman. The judge, Justice Irene Pati, ruled that the prosecution successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The case began when the woman’s husband, Hamza Aliyu, reported the crime at Angwan Rogo police station last November. Usman, a neighbor, repeatedly pressured the woman to meet him at a hotel. When she refused, he threatened to tell her husband she had affairs and abortions.

The couple then secretly recorded their conversations with Usman. These recordings became key evidence for the police prosecutor, Inspector Ibrahim Gokwat, in court.

During the investigation, Usman confessed to the crime and begged for forgiveness. He faced two charges under the Plateau State Penal Code of 2017.

In her judgment, Justice Pati emphasized that the offenses were serious violations of the law. She gave Usman the option to pay a 50,000 naira fine instead of serving the full jail term.

The court’s decision highlights the legal consequences of blackmail and harassment within communities. Authorities encourage victims to report such threats and gather evidence, as demonstrated in this case.
