The Kano State Government is moving to restore administrative balance following a leadership gap, as Governor Abba Yusuf has nominated Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo for confirmation as Deputy Governor. The development, announced on Wednesday, signals efforts to maintain continuity in the state’s executive operations after a recent resignation created a vacancy.

According to a statement from the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, the nomination has been formally transmitted to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening. The process is in line with constitutional provisions that empower a governor to fill such positions to ensure the smooth functioning of government.

The vacancy emerged on March 27, 2026, when the former Deputy Governor, Abdussalam Gwarzo, stepped down voluntarily. Officials say the absence of a deputy at a time of ongoing governance demands made it necessary for the administration to act promptly.

Governor Yusuf, the statement adds, consulted widely with political stakeholders before settling on Garo, a move aimed at strengthening internal coordination within government. He has also urged lawmakers to expedite the confirmation process to avoid prolonged disruption in executive duties.

Garo, 48, brings a lengthy record in public service, having held roles across local government administration and state-level appointments. His experience, authorities say, is expected to support policy implementation and enhance service delivery across key sectors.

Observers note that the speed and outcome of the Assembly’s screening will be critical in determining how quickly the state regains full executive structure. They add that such transitions test institutional responsiveness, particularly in ensuring governance remains steady despite leadership changes.
