A former Nigerian leader has issued a stark warning, stating that the country’s massive population of unschooled children is creating a future army for violent extremists. Olusegun Obasanjo raised the alarm, describing the estimated 24 million young Nigerians not in classrooms as a “time bomb” for the nation. He cautioned that failing to educate this generation directly fuels the ranks of terrorist groups like Boko Haram.

Speaking at a public event in Sokoto, Obasanjo stated that the outcome was predictable. “You don’t need an oracle to know they will become the recruiting ground for the Boko Haram of tomorrow,” he declared. His comments highlight the direct link between the education crisis and the worsening security situation in parts of the country.

The former President called for immediate action from the nation’s leaders. He urged a major shift in focus towards human development, which includes providing education, practical skills, and job opportunities for the youth. He argued that an educated and hopeful child is more likely to contribute positively to society.

Obasanjo concluded with a simple but powerful choice for the country. He stated that providing skills and hope directs children towards building the nation, while neglect prepares them for destruction in the “wrong hands.” This framing presents the education crisis not just as a social issue, but as an urgent matter of national security.
