– Steve Ovirih.

A Medical expert and Special Adviser to Ondo State Government on Health, Prof Dayo Faduyile, OON, has stressed that smoking can aid the growth of cancer in the body.

In a statement credited to Prof Dayo Faduyile and obtained by thepolity.net , the former President, Nigeria Medical Association, NMA said extensive use of cigarettes and tobacco smoking started around 2nd world War and ever since there has not been any let or reduction in the rate people puff hard on the nicotine content.

Faduyile said 20 years after the 2nd world War, cancer of lungs skyrocketed amongst men. Going further, he said women started smoking actively in the late 60s and 20 years after, lungs cancer peaked among women .

While noting that smoking is implicated in most cancers , he added that cancer is more pronounced in lungs, breast, cervix, oral cavity, alimentary canal, and many other debilitating chronic illnesses.

On the need to quit smoking , Prof Faduyile added that besides the harsh reality of smokers being liable to die young, the habit makes the body to be prone to other harmful consequences of the intake of nicotine in the body , a habit which he described as unhealthy.
