OSOPADEC Reaffirms Ondo State’s Jurisdiction Over Eba Island, Calls for Constitutional Resolution of Boundary Matters

The Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) has closely monitored recent developments concerning Eba Island, particularly following reports of oil discovery and the ensuing territorial claims.

After a careful review of historical records, traditional authority structures, and long-standing administrative practices, the Commission affirms unequivocally that Eba Island forms part of Atijere Kingdom, Mahin Ward 4, in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State. The island has been continuously inhabited by the Ilaje people and administered under the recognised traditional institutions of the Amapetu of Mahinland and the Molokun of Atijere, within the constitutional framework of Ondo State.

Reinforcing this position, OSOPADEC Chairman, Prince Olabiyi Olaleye Poroye, recently reiterated that Eba Island remains an integral part of Ondo State, notwithstanding ongoing boundary discussions with Ogun State. The Chairman emphasised that the island lies firmly within the Atijere axis and has not been ceded under any lawful arrangement.

Documented evidence demonstrates continuous occupation, established cultural affiliation, and decades of administrative governance under Ondo State institutions. These factors constitute fundamental principles in determining territorial legitimacy under both constitutional and customary law. The Commission remains committed to ensuring peaceful coexistence among communities and will continue to execute developmental projects in the area without interruption.

OSOPADEC recognises and welcomes responsible investment initiatives aimed at enhancing national oil production and promoting economic growth. However, the discovery of natural resources must not serve as a basis for altering historically established boundaries or disregarding lawful administrative control. Boundary matters between states fall strictly within the statutory mandate of the National Boundary Commission and other constitutionally recognised authorities.

In the interest of peace, stability, and investor confidence, the Commission calls for:

1. Immediate recourse to constitutionally recognised boundary resolution mechanisms;

2. Independent and objective verification of territorial boundaries through historical, legal, and empirical evidence;

3. Strict observance of due process by all stakeholders;

4. Respect for established traditional leadership and host community rights as provided under the Petroleum Industry Act; and

5. Sustained dialogue to prevent tension and safeguard communal harmony.

The Commission reiterates its unwavering commitment to peace, lawful engagement, and constructive partnership with the Federal Government, relevant agencies, and legitimate investors. OSOPADEC remains resolute in protecting the rights and interests of host communities within Ondo State, while urging all parties to act with prudence, respect for history, and adherence to constitutional order.

Signed:

Prince Olabiyi Olaleye Poroye

Executive Chairman/CEO

Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC)
