Questions over party identity, discipline and internal cohesion have resurfaced within the Lagos chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following the reaffirmation of the suspension of several prominent members, including elder statesman Olabode George.

The decision was defended on Saturday by Lagos PDP factional chairman, Muka Popoola, who said the action was aimed at preserving clarity within the party. According to him, the affected members were already under suspension following an earlier decision of the party’s National Executive Committee, and the state chapter merely restated that position.

Popoola argued that the controversy goes beyond disciplinary measures and touches on a broader challenge facing political parties ahead of the 2027 elections. He alleged that some of the suspended individuals had aligned themselves with other political platforms while continuing to publicly identify with the PDP, a situation he said could create uncertainty among party members and supporters.

The development also highlights growing concerns over political alliances and defections as parties prepare for future contests. The Lagos PDP leadership insisted that no official alliance had been approved between the party and the Allied People’s Movement, maintaining that only authorised party organs could sanction such arrangements.

The reaffirmation followed recommendations by the Lagos PDP Disciplinary Committee, which announced the suspension of 24 members on Friday over allegations ranging from anti-party activities to actions considered capable of causing division within the party. The committee said it reviewed petitions against the affected members and concluded that disciplinary measures should remain in force.

With the suspended members barred from participating in party affairs or representing the PDP in any capacity within the state, the dispute is likely to fuel further debate about internal democracy, party discipline and political loyalty. Analysts say how political parties manage such disagreements may play a significant role in determining their unity and electoral strength as preparations for 2027 gather momentum.
