Tinubu’s Defection Gambit Sparks Fears of One-Party Dominance Amid Economic Turmoil

President Bola Tinubu’s declaration that he anticipates a surge of opposition defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has ignited a firestorm of debate over Nigeria’s democratic future. Speaking at the APC’s Renewed Hope Agenda Summit on Thursday, Tinubu framed the defections as a natural consequence of his administration’s “successes,” while critics warned of a slide toward one-party hegemony and a disconnect from citizens reeling under economic hardship .

Tinubu, buoyed by a unanimous endorsement from 22 APC governors and the party’s National Working Committee, likened opposition parties to “sinking ships” and justified defections as a pragmatic survival tactic. “You don’t blame people for bailing out when there’s no life jacket,” he asserted, invoking constitutional rights to freedom of association .

The remarks follow a wave of high-profile defections, including Delta State’s Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, six House of Representatives members, and NNPP lawmakers in Kano. Analysts note this consolidates APC’s dominance but risks stifling pluralism. “This is a calculated move to preempt 2027 challenges,” said political economist Anthony Kila. “Tinubu is leveraging a fragmented opposition, just as he did in 2015” .

Tinubu touted his administration’s economic reforms—scrapping fuel subsidies, unifying exchange rates, and tax overhauls—as catalysts for long-term growth, citing IMF praise and rising foreign investments . Yet, these policies have deepened a cost-of-living crisis: inflation hit 34%, fuel prices tripled, and 63% of Nigerians live in multidimensional poverty .

The human toll is stark. Stampedes at charity food distributions claimed 60 lives in December 2024, including 35 children in Ibadan—a tragedy underscoring desperation . While Tinubu urged patience, Lagos resident Michael Olaleye countered: “Majority of what he’s talking about hasn’t shown” .

Opposition groups slammed the APC’s early endorsement of Tinubu as premature and self-serving. The Middle Belt Forum dismissed it as “sycophancy,” while the Ijaw National Congress warned of a “one-party democracy” . Peter Obi’s Labour Party spokesman, Tanko Yinusa, predicted internal APC strife: “Defectors today are here for self-interest, not loyalty” .

CUPP, a coalition of opposition parties, accused the APC of fearing electoral rejection: “This reflects disconnect from Nigerians’ suffering,” spokesperson Peter Ameh stated . Critics also questioned Tinubu’s focus on 2027 politicking amid unresolved insecurity and protests over “devastation and hunger” .

The APC’s strategy hinges on portraying Tinubu as Nigeria’s indispensable reformer. Senate President Godswill Akpabio lauded his “uncommon sagacity,” while Speaker Tajudeen Abbas claimed reforms boosted foreign reserves and GDP growth . However, economists caution that growth metrics mask widespread pain. “Reforms must not sacrifice citizens’ welfare,” warned ISS analyst Teniola Tayo .

With opposition forces rumored to pitch around the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the stage is set for a contentious battle. Yet, as protests mount and analysts decry early campaigning, Tinubu faces a dual challenge: convincing voters of his economic vision while navigating fears of democratic backsliding .

Tinubu’s defection rhetoric underscores a high-stakes political calculus. While consolidating power may secure APC’s dominance, it risks alienating a populace demanding tangible relief.
