A deepening rift within Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has taken a dramatic turn as a prominent support group launched a scathing counteroffensive against Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, branding him the “chief architect” of the party’s protracted crisis. In a bold warning to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the faction cautioned that Wike’s “proven unpredictability” poses a latent threat to his new allies, signaling broader political tremors ahead.
The PDP Frontiers for Change and Progress, a vocal internal advocacy group, escalated tensions this week by directly challenging Wike’s recent allegations against Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah. In a Sunday statement, Wike had accused the two governors of reneging on a “gentleman’s agreement” to retain Senator Samuel Anyanwu as PDP National Secretary and withdraw lawsuits against the controversial Rivers State emergency rule. Declaring an end to backroom negotiations, Wike vowed to “fight to finish,” framing Makinde and Mbah as saboteurs undermining party unity.
But the PDP Frontiers group, in a fiery rebuttal, flipped the script. National Coordinator Emeka Yellow Ikpegbu accused Wike of “orchestrating a smear campaign” to deflect from his own role as a “destabilizing force” within the PDP. “Wike is standing truth on its head,” Ikpegbu asserted, alleging the minister had long acted as an “APC mole” while masquerading as a peacemaker.
The conflict traces back to simmering discontent over Wike’s alliance with the APC-led federal government following President Bola Tinubu’s 2023 election victory. Once a PDP stalwart and leader of the dissident G5 faction, Wike’s defection to the Tinubu cabinet fractured his relationship with former allies, including Makinde, who stood with him during the G5’s anti-party rebellion.
The PDP Frontiers’ statement paints Wike’s latest outburst as a desperate bid to retain influence. “His conditions for ‘peace’ were never about the party’s interests but about securing leverage for himself and his APC collaborators,” Ikpegbu claimed, arguing that Wike’s demand to retain Anyanwu—a figure critics call his proxy—exposed his “divide-and-rule agenda.”
In a striking pivot, the PDP group turned its focus to the ruling party, urging APC leaders to “weigh the risks” of embracing Wike. “If he could publicly eviscerate Makinde, his staunchest G5 ally, what stops him from turning on his new patrons?” Ikpegbu posited. The warning underscores broader anxieties within political circles about Wike’s kingmaker ambitions and his reputation for volatile loyalty.
Amid the infighting, the PDP Frontiers called on party loyalists to isolate Wike and rally behind governors like Makinde and Mbah, whom they frame as “pillars of PDP’s renaissance.” The group’s message is clear: Wike’s exit, though potentially turbulent, is necessary for the opposition to regroup.
