A group of opposition party chieftains and support groups under the aegis of PDP Forever Initiative has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to transmit power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
The group, which made its demand at a press conference in Abuja, expressed concern over the Governor’s prolonged absence from office due to ill health. They argued that his absence has created a leadership vacuum and is hindering the smooth running of state affairs.
PDP Forever Initiative’s National Coordinator, Hon. Obande Gideon Obande, stated that the group is not questioning Governor Akeredolu’s capacity to govern but is concerned about his current health status. He emphasized that the Governor should invoke the provisions of the constitution and transmit power to his deputy to ensure continuity of governance.
The group warned that if Governor Akeredolu fails to comply with their ultimatum, they will occupy the Ondo State Government House to press home their demand. They also accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of failing to provide effective leadership in the state and at the federal level.
Hon. Obande further stated that the PDP has a history of upholding the constitution and ensuring smooth governance in similar situations. He cited the example of former President Umaru Yar’Adua’s illness and the party’s decision to empower the then Vice President, Goodluck Jonathan, as Acting President.
The group also criticized the alleged influence of non-state actors on the management of Ondo State affairs, particularly those close to Governor Akeredolu. They accused these individuals of preventing the Deputy Governor from assuming his constitutional duties and worsening the situation in the state.
PDP Forever Initiative reiterated its commitment to promoting good governance and ensuring that the constitution is upheld. They called on all Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation, to join them in demanding transparency and accountability from those in power.
