Nigeria’s political discourse has again come under focus following comments attributed to former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, with Ohanaeze Ndigbo urging political leaders to prioritise governance, stability and national development over rhetoric capable of deepening political divisions.
In a statement issued on Monday, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation responded to reports that Obi had called for President Bola Tinubu’s resignation in the wake of political developments in the United Kingdom. The group described the comparison as inappropriate and argued that Nigeria’s political realities require solutions rooted in the country’s constitutional and democratic framework.
Addressing the matter from a governance perspective, Ohanaeze said public figures must recognise the impact of their statements on national cohesion, especially at a time when the country is navigating economic reforms, infrastructure development and security challenges. The organisation stressed that democratic institutions are strengthened through constructive engagement rather than actions that could heighten political tension.
The group also used the opportunity to draw attention to ongoing federal projects, particularly in the South-East and other parts of the country. According to the organisation, major infrastructure initiatives, including highway developments and regional connectivity projects, have the potential to support economic growth, improve transportation and encourage investment if sustained.
Ohanaeze further pointed to reported improvements in economic indicators and security conditions in parts of the South-East, noting that such developments could contribute to broader national stability. The organisation said continued collaboration between the Federal Government and regional stakeholders remains important in consolidating gains and addressing lingering challenges.
While reaffirming that Obi is entitled to his personal views, Ohanaeze stated that his position should not be interpreted as representing the collective stance of the Igbo people. The organisation called on political actors across party lines to embrace dialogue, demonstrate restraint and focus on policies capable of advancing national unity, economic progress and democratic stability.
