A historical political controversy flared anew at a high-level dialogue on African democracy in Accra, sparking a fresh war of words between former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and a former political ally. The debate over Obasanjo’s alleged bid for a third term in office, a deeply contentious chapter in Nigeria’s political history, was reignited, highlighting the persistent tensions between personal legacy and institutional accountability.

The confrontation began when Obasanjo, speaking at an event hosted by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, categorically denied ever seeking to extend his presidency. “I’m not a fool. If I wanted a third term, I know how to go about it. And there is no Nigerian dead or alive that would say I called him and told him I wanted a third term,” Obasanjo stated, arguing that securing debt relief for Nigeria was a far greater challenge he successfully overcame . His remarks were part of a broader dialogue where he and other leaders, including Ghana’s President John Mahama, warned that democracy in Africa is strained and requires urgent reform to avoid collapse.

However, this denial was swiftly challenged by Dr. Usman Bugaje, a former member of the House of Representatives who served during Obasanjo’s administration. Appearing on Arise Television, Bugaje insisted that Obasanjo “did everything within his power” to secure a third term . He dismissed Obasanjo’s denial as a matter of semantics, stating, “the fact that he did not take a telephone to make a particular call to anybody is not sufficient evidence that he did not look for third term” . Bugaje claimed firsthand knowledge of the alleged campaign, recalling intimidation tactics used against lawmakers who opposed the move, including threats and financial inducements .

The sharply contrasting accounts underscore a fundamental conflict in African political narratives.

Olusegun Obasanjo Denies any third-term ambition, framing the accusation as illogical. Argues that since he achieved more difficult goals like debt relief, a third term would have been achievable if desired.

Usman Bugaje Asserts the campaign was real and intense, relying on proxies and pressure. Cites firsthand experience as a legislator, alleging threats and money were used to push the agenda.

This exchange transcends a mere historical dispute, touching on the very issues of leader accountability and institutional integrity discussed at the Accra forum. Former President Goodluck Jonathan had earlier noted that electoral manipulation is a primary threat to democracy, allowing leaders to perpetuate themselves in power against the people’s will . Bugaje’s allegations directly counter Obasanjo’s current posture as an elder statesman advocating for democratic reforms .

The unresolved nature of this chapter in Nigerian history demonstrates how allegations of constitutional manipulation continue to shape political discourse and define legacies. As long as key participants tell conflicting stories, this saga will remain a potent symbol of the challenges facing democratic consolidation on the continent.
