Edo extends resumption of schools till February.

– Steve Ovirih.

Schools in Edo State will not be resuming until February 1st, 2021 barring an unforseen rise in the cases of the second strain of the Coronavirus pandemic in Edo State.

This indication was given by the State Deputy Governor, Mr. Philip Shaibu who was speaking on behalf of the Governor, Godwin Obaseki at the inauguration of a committee on Covid 19 in the state.

Mr. Shaibu said while it was appropriate for schools to resume, it is quite necessary to show commitment to the welfare of minors and children of schooling age who are vulnerable to the pandemic. He noted that with the rate of the rise in the pandemic in the country which stands at 52% now, effort must be made to ensure that Edo State does not become a hotbed of the new strain of the virus, which has started ravaging the country again.

It will be recalled that Edo State has announced a curfew all in government’s bid to curb the spread of the virus.

While the Federal Government through the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu has announced the opening of schools by January 18th across the country, the Presidential Task Force on Covid 19 has noted that it will be better if resumption of schools can be stepped down until all necessary precautions are taken in order to forestall a hurried closure of schools should there be an uncontrollable rise in the cases of the pandemic.
