The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced August 16 as the date for critical by-elections across 16 constituencies in 12 states, marking a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s electoral landscape. The decision, unveiled during INEC’s quarterly meeting with political parties in Abuja, comes amid heightened political tensions, legal battles, and security concerns in some regions.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, revealed that the commission will deploy 30,451 officials to oversee the polls, which will involve 3,553,659 registered voters spread across 32 Local Government Areas, 356 wards, and 6,987 polling units. The by-elections aim to fill legislative vacancies caused by deaths, resignations, and court orders—a recurring challenge since the 2023 general elections.

However, the electoral body faces significant obstacles. Rivers State, currently under a state of emergency, will see its Khana II State Constituency election postponed indefinitely. Similarly, Talata Mafara South in Zamfara remains in limbo due to unresolved legal disputes.

The upcoming by-elections will cover two Senatorial Districts, Anambra South and Edo Central. Five Federal Constituencies Including Ovia South-West/Ovia South-East (Edo), Ibadan North (Oyo), and Chikun/Kajuru (Kaduna) . Nine State Constituencies Spanning Adamawa, Anambra, Kano, Niger, Taraba, and Zamfara.

Additionally, INEC will conduct two court-ordered re-run elections in Enugu South I and Ghari/Tsanyawa (Kano), where previous attempts were marred by violence and voter intimidation.

With the electoral clock ticking, political parties have been given a narrow window to field candidates with primaries holding on July 17–21. Nomination Submissions on July 22–26  and Campaigns on August 2–14.

Analysts suggest that the compressed schedule could disadvantage smaller parties while favoring well-established political machines. The ruling and opposition parties are expected to engage in fierce battles, particularly in swing states like Kaduna, Ogun, and Kano.

The exclusion of Rivers State due to its state of emergency underscores the lingering security challenges that threaten Nigeria’s electoral integrity. Meanwhile, the unresolved legal tussle in Zamfara raises questions about judicial delays impacting democratic processes.

Prof. Yakubu assured stakeholders that INEC remains committed to a free and fair process, with detailed guidelines to be published on the commission’s website. However, civil society groups have called for enhanced security measures to prevent a repeat of the violence that disrupted earlier polls in Enugu and Kano.

These by-elections are more than just filling legislative seats—they are a litmus test for Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of the 2027 general elections. With millions of voters set to participate, the outcomes could reshape political alliances and influence future governance.

As the countdown begins, all eyes will be on INEC, security agencies, and political actors to ensure that democracy prevails—despite the hurdles.
