Major Blow for Ruling Party as Thousands Defect to Opposition

In a significant political shift, tens of thousands of supporters have abandoned Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Kebbi State. The mass defection is seen as a major setback for the party in the region.

The event occurred during a large rally over the weekend in Lega Local Government Area. The supporters, claimed to number over 100,000, officially joined the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The ADC’s mobilization team stated the figure was actually above 120,000. This move is part of a growing trend of politicians and voters leaving the APC for the ADC ahead of the 2027 elections.

The defections are linked to efforts by former Justice Minister Abubakar Malami. Although currently detained by the anti-graft commission, Malami has been actively encouraging moves into the ADC.

The ADC is rapidly gaining ground as a platform for opposition figures. Reports indicate the party has welcomed large numbers of new members from the APC in various states across the country.

This event in Kebbi highlights increasing internal challenges and voter dissatisfaction facing the ruling party. It signals a potential realignment of political loyalties as the next general election approaches.
