Alhaji Bashir Tofa, the Kano business man and politician who battled Late Chief MKO Abiola at the polls for the Presidency during the battle royale June 12, 1993 election is dead.
Tofa who has been sick lately eventually died on Monday, 3rd January at the Intensive Care Unit of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital , UBTH, Kano.
He was until his death a staunch member of Arewa Consultative Forum ( ACF) , the elite league of Northern Nigerians whose input and opinion shape political views in the country.
Alhaji Bashir Tofa was the Presidential flag bearer of National Republican Convention (NRC), the party which contested the June 12 poll with the Social Democratic Party (SDP); the election which was eventually won by Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola and adjudged as the freest and fairest election in Nigeria was annulled by the military junta headed by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida.
The Arewa Consultative Forum has described Alhaji Tofa’s demise as a huge loss to the forum and to Nigeria in general as the Kano born prince exited when his counsel was most needed in the polity.
Alhaji Tofa was born in 1947 and became popular in the Nigerian political scene having won the primaries of NRC in their 1992 primaries’ delegate election.
He has since been buried in Kano according to Islamic rite.
