In a dramatic pre-dawn operation casting a long shadow over Nigeria’s electoral integrity, Ogun State Police apprehended two officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), a prominent local politician, and three others, allegedly caught red-handed with a substantial cash haul suspected for vote-buying. The sting, occurring mere hours before polls opened for Saturday’s critical Remo Federal Constituency by-election, exposes a web of clandestine meetings and shadowy intermediaries.

According to a detailed account provided by Police Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Odutola, the arrests unfolded with cinematic precision. At approximately 12:45 am on Saturday, a vigilant police patrol team attached to the Iperu Remo Division intercepted a Mitsubishi Spacewagon (Registration: LAGOS AKD 887 HT). Inside were the driver and two individuals soon identified as INEC staff: Toryem Joe-Stans and Mandara Aminat. Also detained at the scene was a top Ogun State politician, whose identity reverberated through political circles as video of the arrest rapidly circulated online.

A thorough search of the vehicle yielded the damning evidence: a bundle of cash totaling Two Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N2,500,000). Police sources confirmed the money was recovered directly from Mr. Toryem Joe-Stans. Under immediate interrogation, Joe-Stans reportedly confessed to the cash’s illicit purpose. He stated the money had been handed to him just hours earlier at the Kehoy Hotel in Iperu, Ogun State. Crucially, he named his source only by the cryptic alias “Political Solution,” claiming this individual acted on the direct orders of Joe-Stans’ own INEC supervisor.

The rapidly spreading video footage captured the tense moments following the interception. An off-camera voice narrates the INEC official’s claim – that he was summoned by his constituency supervisor to meet a politician at the hotel to receive the funds. The politician, visibly present in the video, immediately issued a forceful denial. “I don’t know anything about this money you’re talking about,” he is heard insisting to the police, adding, “I am still waiting for you to tell me why I am here,” attempting to distance himself from the unfolding scandal despite his presence in the intercepted vehicle.

Reacting swiftly to the grave implications of INEC personnel’s alleged involvement in electoral malpractice, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, has ordered the immediate transfer of all suspects to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Eleweran. SP Odutola emphasized the directive mandates a “discreet” but urgent investigation to unravel the full chain of command behind the cash, the identity of “Political Solution,” and the extent of the conspiracy.

While assuring the public of continued vigilance throughout the by-election, Odutola pledged the Command would keep citizens informed of the investigation’s progress. This incident, however, strikes at the heart of Nigeria’s persistent struggle against vote-buying, particularly alarming due the direct implication of electoral commission officials tasked with safeguarding the process. The involvement of a figure known only as “Political Solution” and the alleged directive from within INEC ranks suggest a sophisticated operation, raising urgent questions about systemic vulnerabilities exploited in the shadows of Nigeria’s democracy. The outcome of the SCID investigation is now awaited with intense public and political interest.
